Far from the beach side resorts in Jamaica lies May Pen, a lively but poor town known around the island for its chaotic but well-stocked food markets. Yvonne and her mother Lorna grew up in this shanty town without much help. Lorna, a beautiful, God-fearing woman was often dismissed because of her pacifistic nature. As a product of that woman, Yvonne felt the societal pressures of growing up as the poorest in her neighborhood, often going to bed hungry with only her mother's closeness for comfort.

This story is about poverty, perseverance, and the human spirit. Where a mother's unconditional love motivated and impassioned a young Jamaican girl to never give up on her dreams.
